Marilyn Monroe Statue Comes to Palm Springs

26-FOOT-TALL
 “FOREVER MARILYN”
SCULPTURE COMING
 TO PALM SPRINGS!

Last week, the  statue was removed from its current location in Chicago. The 34,000-pound sculpture, which costs about $40,000 to
transport, will be trucked across the country and arrive in Palm Springs
on May 14. It will take a few days — and a few cranes — to reassemble
it at the corner of Palm Canyon and Tahquitz Canyon Way, where it will
reside until June 2013.

The sculpture by Seward Johnson, the 80-year-old artist and Johnson
& Johnson heir who’s known for casting famous images into giant
sculptures, re-creates the scene from the 1955 film “The Seven Year
Itch” in which a drafty New York subway grate blows the sex symbol’s
skirt well above her knees.

The piece did not receive the
warmest reception from the Windy City since its  debut last year, and was the
target of more than a few vandals and critics. Some called the
undergarment-baring pose sexist, while VirtualTourist.com dubbed
“Forever Marilyn” the No. 1 piece of bad public art — ahead of a
Bewitched statue in Salem, Mass.

Several cities tried to bid  to host the massive Marilyn when her Chicago
residency wrapped, including China and Brazil, perhaps because August marks the 50th anniversary of
the Hollywood legend’s death.

“We received many requests as far
away as Tokyo and Madrid and cities in Brazil, and we really felt that
Palm Springs has a special connection to Marilyn because it is the
legendary play land for Hollywood,” said Paula Stoeke, the director and
curator of the Sculpture Foundation, an organization funded and run by
Johnson with offices in Santa Monica.

CHARO Brings SEXY SEXY to Palm Springs White Party

The woman whose passport reads “María del Rosario Pilar Martínez Molina Gutiérrez de los Perales Santa Ana Romanguera y de la Hinojosa Rasten” has so many fantastic stories that the list of great ones goes on longer than her official name!

CHARO started in Las Vegas back in the 1970s, and before she was legal. “I brought so many people in they looked the other way,” she says. Her time in Sin City is a history lesson of talent. “It was just like the movies. People dressed perfectly; there was an ambience of class.” Her co-stars in sophistication included Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Junior (“The best performer in the world”), and a setting that she calls “a dream come true.”

While the dream may have ended (“Las Vegas is Disneyland now”), Charo has not. She performs year-round. On February 25 she  performed  her new song, “Sexy, Sexy” at Splash Bar in New York, and on April 10 she’ll perform at the famous WHITE PARTY in Palm Springs. Charo’s not going back in time, she’s moving with it.

Charo left the scene before the scene left her. “I knew that I didn’t want my child to be raised by nannies. In the Eighties, I was making a hundred thousand a week in Vegas and Reno, and instead I went to Hawaii where my son could grow up normal with the same friends.” She still performed in Waikiki, and answers the question of possible regrets before you ask. “My son doesn’t have to write a book called ‘Cuchi-Cuchi Dearest.’” It’s a laugh line on her part, and a bittersweet note for anyone who remembers the lush desert days.

“When I came back to Vegas in 2000, I couldn’t believe it. Corporations took over, and they looked at people like numbers. I stopped learning the names of my bosses because every three months there would be a new one. There was a time when you were a VIP; now you’re a lump.”

“Sexy, Sexy” was written by Charo’s son, Shel Rasten, a musician in his own right, and it’s an infectious dance number that Charo calls “the new Cuchi-Cuchi.” If you notice a change in her audience, it’s because a lot of the ambience now has a touch of same-sex class. Charo’s flamboyant look has, not surprisingly, kept her in the gay loop.

“I am against discrimination and against oppression,” she says. “The people in the White House should treat the country like it’s their own children. Same sexes should be respected and allowed to marry. You have to fight, fight, fight!”

But do you know WHERE
you are going to stay??

The choice is simple, if you’re a man….INNdulge.

INNdulge corners the market on comfortable and casual. One section of the structure has the requisite pool and hot tub, and features rooms that are spacious and pampered without being stuffy, with nicely preserved ’50’s style kitchenettes (PS loves its retro history! But new updates are always being done –  recently  new headboards, desks, tables, dresser’s, flat screen TV’s, and original artwork were added to rooms.)

There is a poolside social hour  and INNdulge probably boasts the most spectacular mountain-range view. Practically every Palm Springs Locale is outfitted with misters to combat the desert heat, but INNdulge has the only pool chiller which, when the heat soars to skin-melting temperatures, is quite a draw.

The  owners have transformed this historic inn into the award winning resort it is today.

And check this out, last week they  installed the desert’s first ever 24 hour security guard.  His name is Pablo.

Isn’t that great?!

But seriously, this is the place to stay in Palm Springs. INNdulge Palm Springs is a wonderful example of Palm Springs 50’s architecture….and hospitality. The resort is centered around a kidney-shaped pool. The beautifully landscaped grounds frame the surrounding hotel rooms. The only thing better than the architecture and grounds of the property are the resort’s employees and its owners, who maintain a friendly atmosphere resulting in a loyal repeat crowd.

Is the BOOM Planned Gay Community Real? Or just a Mirage?

ALLEGEDLY, Boom
is a planned community
slated for 100+ acres in
Rancho Mirage,
and was originally conceived with gay people in mind, but straight people can come too–everyone’s invited to the multi-generational, pedestrian-oriented, culture-driven, hyphenation-mad little burg, for which plans include 300 residences in eight neighborhoods, an entertainment complex, a boutique hotel, a gym, and “state-of-the-art wellness facilities” in phase one (phase two will add more residences).

The project was created by Los Angeles-based developer Boom Communities, Inc.; architect Matthias Hollwich of Hollwich Kushner; and ten architecture firms, half from New York, half from Europe and California.

This is all according to Curbed LA . I don’t know. It’s a little hard for me to believe in these economic times this is a $250 million project in the works.

Rumor has it BOOM will break ground in 2012 starting with 300 residences built in eight neighborhoods, each designed by a different firm.

The BOOM concept extends to the online world as well with www.boomforlife.com, designed by renowned Bruce Mau Design in Toronto, who also developed the BOOM brand and graphic identity. The web portal uses social media to encourage participation from the virtual community in addition to the one built from bricks and mortar.

Exciting News for
Palm Springs!

Oy Vey! My Son Is Gay! is a family romantic comedy roller-coaster ride of laughs and shows how far we come and yet how far we still have to go.  The star-studded cast and wonderful story will have you laughing – and talking and thinking.

At a time where society is currently in dire stress, the public is even more challenged to find channels for relief and escape.  The film, “OY VEY! MY SON IS GAY!” delivers a very powerful message through the language of humor, and successfully combines the elements of fun, laughter, love, respect, tolerance and the  value of relationships.  It finds humor in the most awkward situations, but remains a powerful reminder that LOVE IS LOVE.

This movie was a long journey of 8 years of hard work, which finally resulted in a heartwarming and inspirational family comedy with an amazing and accomplished cast.

The film’s director, Evgeny Afineevksy (born in Russia, raised in Israel and currently living in the USA)  utilized powerful tools and different multicultural elements (drawn from his multicultural background) to make the movie unique.  He created the movie with a fresh perspective on a very unusual and sensitive matter; mixing elements of light language of comedy with sincerity; treating today’s  tough and sensitive subject with empathy and humor; and, creating funny and relatable characters, allowing the humor to progress from and within the characters.  “OY VEY! MY SON IS GAY! was awarded the Best Script at the 41st Houston World Festival and the Monaco Film Festival, and won over 20 different awards internationally during last year.

Every mother wants their child to get married and have a family.

This is the story of  a Jewish family living in the North Shore of Long Island, where every Friday night Shirley Hirsch (Lainie Kazan) invites another “perfect” girl for Shabbat dinner in hopes that her son, Nelson (John Lloyd Young), will marry a nice Jewish girl.

When Shirley and Martin (Saul Rubinek) once again set him up on a date, Nelson reveals that he is already seeing someone. Shirley and Martin are thrilled and can’t wait to meet the lucky lady.

In a motherly attempt at finding out who her son is dating, Shirley stops by Nelson’s apartment. She is greeted by Angelo Ferraro (Jai Rodriguez), Nelson’s live-in boyfriend, and in order to not divulge Nelson’s secret life, Angelo introduces himself as his decorator! And the plot thickens!
